How to Become a TreeKeeper

The Baltimore TreeKeepers (TK) offers a variety of classes and workshops to train citizens to care for the trees throughout the city of Baltimore. Classes are scheduled from community requests. TreeKeeper Classes

100 Level Courses:

TreeKeepers 101- Trees & Baltimore: This class discusses the role of trees in clean water, climate change, and habitat diversity in Baltimore. It introduces several local environmental organizations that are working to protect our city and the Chesapeake Bay.

TreeKeepers 102-The Science of Trees: Learn how trees grow and how the way we plant and care for them affects their growth and development. (This class includes an outdoor hands-on session on the proper way to plant a tree to help trees grow strong, healthy, and beautiful!)

200 Level Courses:

TreeKeepers 201-Advanced Tree Planting for Leadership Certification: Review of key concepts; sharing field experiences; project management; and urban stresses on trees.

TreeKeepers 202-Advanced Tree Pruning for Certification: This class is designed to teach volunteers basic on-the-ground pruning techniques for young trees that will help in developing good tree canopy structure. (A portion of the instruction for this class will take place outdoors-please dress appropriately)

300 Level Courses:

TreeKeepers 301-Tree ID: Summer outdoor workshops emphasize use of a tree key to learn tree parts for identification. Winter outdoor workshops examine bark, form, and bud characteristics for identification.

TreeKeepers 302-Tree Selection: Discussion on basic landscape design principles for choosing tree species. (Hands-on activity included)

400 Level Courses:

TreeKeeper Certifications

Certified Tree Planting Leader Requirements:

  • TreeKeepers 101-Trees & Baltimore
  • TreeKeepers 102-The Science of Trees
  • TreeKeepers 201-Advanced Tree Planting for Leadership Certification
  • MUST volunteer at TWO tree planting events held by any TreeKeepers partners (CLICK HERE for full list of partners)

Certified Tree Pruner Requirements:

  • TreeKeepers 101-Trees & Baltimore
  • TreeKeepers 102-The Science of Trees
  • TreeKeepers 202-Advanced Tree Pruning for Certification
  • MUST volunteer at TWO pruning workshops held by any TreeKeepers partners (CLICK HERE for full list of partners)
