The Baltimore Tree Trust’s second cohort of Urban Roots Apprenticeship starts on Monday, and we are excited to welcome our new apprentices to the team!
The apprenticeship prepares Baltimore City residents for long-term careers in the landscaping and tree care industry by providing training in the field and connecting apprentices to employers over the 6-weeks. Each different career option within tree care and landscaping, as well as the overall breadth of the industry, is hard to see from the outside, but there is an opportunity available for almost anyone. To reforest and restore land, we need workers from across sectors, including engineers, scientists, laborers and equipment operators.
More jobs are created when we invest money in reforestation and land restoration than when the same amount of money is invested in other renewable energy industries and even some non-green industries. The below graph from Grist Magazine shows the comparison between jobs created after investing $1 million in reforestation compared to other industries.

Urban Roots is the start of what we hope our apprentices find to be a long and successful career in the industry — no matter what career path they choose to take within it.
