Community Greening
Expanding our impact
Community greening services
We began our Community Greening Services to assist residents in creating more plantable sites in their neighborhoods. More stumps and impervious surfaces removed means more trees in areas severely impacted by the urban heat island effect. Since acquiring a concrete saw in 2021, our team has removed over 100,000 square feet of heat-trapping impervious surface. Removing concrete and asphalt across areas of Baltimore City allows water to flow freely into the soil, helping to combat flooding and filter polluted stormwater run-off. In 2023, we received funding support for the purchase of a stump grinder to remove tree stumps in pits that hinder the planting of new trees.
The ability to do this work ourselves greatly increases the number of street tree planting opportunities for our organization– all in an effort to reach the 40% tree canopy cover goal across Baltimore City.
Services
New Tree Well Creation: Our concrete cutting team will create 4’x8′ tree wells in the right-of-way. When the job is completed, the wells will be ready for new trees.
Existing Tree Well Expansion: Our concrete cutting team will expand small tree wells in the right-of-way to better accommodate the size of a growing tree. The size of finished tree wells may vary.
Tree Planting: Our tree planting crew will plant trees on public or private property. Though we will take species request, ultimately our team of Neighborhood Foresters will determine the right tree for each location.
Stump Grinding: Our stump grinding team will grind stumps down a maximum of one foot below ground level in an existing tree pit. Stumps are priced per every 12″ in diameter.
Tree Planting for Mitigation
The Maryland Forest Conservation Act was implemented to minimize the loss of Maryland’s existing tree canopy due to land development and new construction. As part of the Act, developers must re-plant any forest they disturb during construction at a nearby location. Baltimore Tree Trust can partner with a company or developer to provide the tree-planting labor at a large scale.
Pricing
Pricing for each community greening project is unique to the neighborhood request. To help us determine pricing for your project, please complete THIS FORM. We will use your responses, along with your neighborhood Tree Equity Score to generate a quote for services.
Designed by American Forests, the Tree Equity Score utilizes a science-based approach to determine the tree canopy cover needed in a neighborhood to ensure that all people in urban areas can benefit from trees. The tool indicates whether there are enough trees in a specific neighborhood for everyone to experience the health, economic and climate benefits that trees provide. We use this score to evaluate the needs of residents, and categorize a project for possible Pledge Pricing. If your project qualifies for Pledge Pricing, Baltimore Tree Trust pledges to cut one tree well in a historically disadvantaged area of Baltimore City for every tree well cut in your project neighborhood.
Note: Our ability to fulfill community greening service requests is contingent upon resident consent, permitting, and the presence of underground utilities. We also offer a wide range of individual services that are typically included in tree planting and tree care. Inquire for availability.
